All undergraduate and graduate students receive a full tuition scholarship to attend Curtis; however, there are additional fees such as room and board. If you qualify, Curtis provides additional Supplemental Financial Assistance on strictly financial based need.
Although the tuition at Curtis is free, you may need additional support to help fund living and other expenses. You can apply for additional support by applying for the FAFSA to maximize opportunities for receiving financial aid. Grants and loans from FAFSA can help pay for any additional costs at Curtis.
Is Curtis Right for Me?
Given our opinion here at Music School Central, Curtis should be a top pick for most music students; however, the institute is not for everyone. For example, students wishing to pursue electronic music would certainly not be a good fit for the Curtis Institute.
Other considerations include your preferences. Located in Philadelphia, the institute is part of a major metropolitan area and students more drawn to a rural setting may want to apply elsewhere. For those inspired by history, Curtis offers ample historic mansions where classes, rehearsal, and performances take place every day! Besides offering a vibrant city setting full of cultural, artistic, and entertainment opportunities, Philadelphia (Philly by nickname) is a mere 68 minutes away from New York City by train and has significantly lower rents with a 1,200-square-foot loft costing $1,000 per month.
The curriculum at Curtis is based on its founder’s philosophy of creating a place where students can think and express their thoughts in a quiet culture, with the stimulus of personal contact with the highest quality teachers. As a result, the curriculum at Curtis emphasizes one-on-one training with master artists combined with courses in musical studies, liberal arts, and career studies.
For the Curtis Institute of Music and many other schools, the application process can be confusing and difficult to navigate. There are many parts to understanding how to truly and successfully succeed in the audition process.
